Small 8cm Cube Vase decorated by Benny Sirota
Description
This lovely vase was acquired from an online auction and is finished in a lightly textured pale oatmeal glaze, with incisions to each face to add interest. Each face is painted with a circle, each being unique – perhaps a nod to Ben Nicholson, whom the decorator admired. The circles and rim are painted in a burnt sienna colour, each one with a different, subtle loose, abstract pattern. The inside is a gloss white glaze with a couple of areas of minor crazing which feels smooth, so is under and not disrupting the glaze surface – it adds to its visual interest. It has a painted back stamp to the base, Troika St Ives and the initials BS, for one of the three founders, Benny Sirota. Probably dates to the mid-late 1960s. No chips, cracks or restoration showing. Grade 10/10
