A rare Early Step Top Vase which is highly textured and finished in a thick black or very dark brown glaze all over, except the base. This has then been painted with a white rectangle on one side with a translucent dark brown circle within. The other side has a Matt black rectangle with a gloss dark brown circle with blue bleeding through. A subtle, stunning piece. Description

This was acquired from a collector and is a stunning Early Step Top Vase, with a thick black or very dark brown glaze over a heavily textured surface. It is noticeably heavy for its size. There are features in relief, plus painted abstract designs on both main faces. One has an off white large rectangle containing a circle painted in a translucent dark brown. The other face has a matt black rectangle with a gloss dark brown or black circle within with blue bleeding through – subtle yet stunning. This has the rubber stamped Troika St Ives back stamp and an impressed Trident mark as well – probably dating this to the early/mid 1960s. Its condition is Grade 10/10 with no discernible chips, cracks or restoration – just small dots of glazing droplets which add to its appeal. A rare and lovely piece.
